Jeff Daniels takes comedy very seriously.
The actor, writer, director and founder of Chelsea’s Purple Rose Theatre Co. is typically thought of these days in association with his towering dramatic work – for instance, his Emmy-winning role on HBO’s “The Newsroom” or his Tony-nominated Broadway run as the legendary Atticus Finch in “To Kill a Mockingbird.”
But to those who remember his equally steely, furious commitment in films like “Dumb and Dumber” and “The Purple Rose of Cairo” (from which the theater takes its name), it perhaps won’t be a big surprise to learn that Daniels counts comedy as his guiding star when it comes to creating and selecting works for the theater he opened in 1991.
